Before Intubation

• Obtain informed consent. Consider information leaflet.

• Consider anti-sialogogue.

• Decongestant if nasal intubation.

• Consider ergonomics of patient and practicioner positioning.

• Define team roles. Who is airway leader?

• Confirm backup plan. See complications and faliure sections.

• Prepare emergency and induction drugs.

• Calculate topical drugs. maximum lignocaine 9mg/kg LBW.

• Prepare topicalisation drugs and equipment.

• Prepare intubation equipment. Type and size of ETT and devices? Adjuncts?

• Connect monitoring: SpO2, ECG, BP and ETCO2.

• Give supplemental O2. HFNP recommended.

• Consider sedation. Use caution. Second anaesthetist to administer.

• Perform airway topicalisation. Test and top-up if required.

After Intubation

• 2 point check of ETT placement: visual and ETCO2.

• Document including audit forms.

• Patient NBM 2 hours post topicalisation.
